A single-agent system is an AI setup in which a single autonomous agent is responsible for interpreting inputs, deciding what to do next, and executing actions to achieve a goal. In a multi-agent system, agents are assigned distinct roles such as research, planning, execution, or review. This allows each agent to focus on a narrower responsibility, thereby improving quality and depth in complex workflows that require different skills or perspectives.

Parallelism
Multiple agents can operate simultaneously on different subtasks. Parallel execution reduces overall completion time for tasks that can be divided cleanly, such as gathering sources while drafting content or running checks in parallel with generation.

Higher coordination cost
Multi-agent systems require explicit mechanisms for routing tasks, sharing state, resolving conflicts, and merging outputs. These coordination requirements add architectural complexity and introduce additional failure modes if communication or state management is poorly designed.

Strengths

Limitations

  1. Single point of failure: If the agent’s reasoning is wrong, the whole workflow can drift.
  2. Less specialization: One agent may be weaker than multiple specialized agents for broad tasks.
  3. More complex scaling for parallel tasks: When many independent sub-tasks exist, a single agent may be slower.
  4. Context pressure: Long tasks can strain context limits, making summarization and state handling important.
