Out Of The Box Education (OOTB) is an early childhood EdTech company that delivers engaging, curriculum-aligned learning content to educators, parents, and students. Creating high-quality, personalized worksheets at scale was a growing operational bottleneck, one that demanded a smarter approach. Avahi designed and built a GenAI-powered worksheet generation platform on AWS, enabling OOTB to automate content creation across subjects and grade levels in real time. The result: a 70–80% reduction in manual content creation effort, dramatically improved consistency, and a scalable foundation for personalized learning at any scale.
Out Of The Box Education is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based EdTech company focused on early childhood education. OOTB develops learning materials and digital tools that help educators and parents deliver structured, high-quality educational experiences for young learners. As demand for personalized, grade-appropriate content grew, so did the operational complexity of producing it, making innovation in content creation not just desirable, but essential.
Worksheet creation at OOTB was entirely manual, a process that was time-consuming, resource-intensive, and increasingly difficult to scale. Educators and content teams had to individually craft materials for different subjects, grade levels, and student needs, with no reliable system to ensure consistency or speed up iteration. The effort required to keep pace with demand was unsustainable.
Beyond the time cost, manual creation introduced quality variability. Without a standardized approach, worksheets differed in structure, depth, and pedagogical alignment depending on who created them and when. This made it harder to deliver a reliable learning experience across the board.
Personalization compounded the challenge further. Tailoring content to individual students, by subject, skill level, or learning objective, was largely out of reach at any meaningful scale. The manual process simply couldn’t support it without significant additional headcount.
Without a solution, OOTB risked falling behind a market that increasingly demands adaptive, on-demand educational content. Continued reliance on manual workflows would have constrained growth, inflated operational costs, and limited the platform’s ability to serve diverse learner needs effectively.
AWS provided the enterprise-grade infrastructure and AI capabilities OOTB needed to bring this vision to life. At the center of the solution was Amazon Bedrock, which offered managed access to powerful large language models, including Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet, without the overhead of managing underlying model infrastructure. This allowed the team to focus on building product value rather than managing AI operations.
Beyond Bedrock, AWS’s broader ecosystem, including DynamoDB for flexible, scalable data storage, Amazon S3 for file management, and Amazon SES for transactional email, gave the platform a cohesive, production-ready foundation. The combination of managed services, security controls, and elastic scalability made AWS the clear platform of choice for a solution that needed to perform reliably and grow with OOTB’s user base.
Avahi brought a rare combination of deep AWS expertise and applied GenAI experience that made them the right partner for this engagement. As a premier-tier AWS partner, Avahi had the technical credentials and hands-on experience to architect a production-grade AI solution—not just a prototype, but a fully operational platform built to scale.
OOTB needed a partner who understood both the technical complexity of integrating large language models into real-world applications and the user experience demands of an EdTech audience. Avahi’s ability to translate that into a seamless, streaming AI experience, combined with their track record of delivering measurable business impact, made them the ideal choice to lead this initiative.
Avahi designed and delivered a full-stack, GenAI-powered worksheet generation platform built natively on AWS. The system enables educators to generate customized, curriculum-aligned worksheets in real time, eliminating the manual bottleneck that had constrained OOTB’s content operations.
The user journey begins with authentication via JWT-based login, ensuring secure, role-appropriate access for teachers, administrators, and parents. Once logged in, users select the subject, grade level, and activity type they need. Before generation begins, the platform optionally surfaces LLM-powered format suggestions, helping users make informed choices about content structure based on the learning objective.
Worksheet generation is powered by Amazon Bedrock running Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet model. Rather than making users wait for a completed document, Avahi implemented Server-Sent Events (SSE) streaming—delivering the AI-generated content progressively in real time as it’s produced. This dramatically improves the user experience, making generation feel fast and responsive regardless of content length or complexity.
Once generated, worksheets are saved to a version-controlled content library stored in DynamoDB, giving users the ability to access, refine, and iterate on past content without starting from scratch. Users can further refine outputs using AI-assisted quick actions or make manual edits, with each version preserved for future reference.
On the administrative side, Avahi built a resource ingestion pipeline that allows admins to upload supporting materials, which are then tagged and indexed automatically using LLM-based metadata extraction. This enriches the platform’s content intelligence over time, improving suggestion quality and generation relevance. Amazon S3 handles file storage for these assets, while AWS SES powers email-based authentication flows, including password resets, with verified domain identity and DKIM/SPF configuration for secure, reliable delivery.
The entire system was architected with scalability as a first principle. A stateless API backend built on FastAPI, combined with DynamoDB’s flexible schema, ensures the platform can accommodate growing user volumes and expanding content categories without architectural rework.
The GenAI worksheet platform transformed how OOTB Education creates and manages learning content. What previously required significant manual time and effort from educators and content teams is now automated, consistent, and available on demand. The platform handles generation, refinement, and version management in a single unified experience, freeing educators to focus on teaching rather than content production.
The solution also expanded what’s possible for OOTB’s learners. With AI-driven personalization built into the generation workflow, educators can now produce targeted materials for individual students at scale, a capability that simply wasn’t feasible before. The platform is built to grow alongside OOTB’s user base, with an architecture designed for extensibility across subjects, grade levels, and new content formats.
